This past weekend Ibrahim Ford hit the qualifying time to compete at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in the freshman mile. The time to beat was 4:37.50 and he ran 4:37.22 - an elite time for a 9th grader! Ibrahim currently ranks 6th in NYS for all freshman and is 3rd in school history!

Thank you to Sammy, Payton, Corbin, and Mya for doing a fantastic job with morning announcements in April!

Adopted from Lollipop Farms, JoJo became the animal science program’s first pet. Deciding she needed a better habitat, seventh grade students worked in teams to create a design that would meet the requirements to keep JoJo healthy. After completing their project plans, they voted to select the best habitat to meet JoJo’s needs. Congratulations to the team who received the most votes: Jasmine King, Mackenzie Liles and Tabby Derrenbacker!

Students in Miss Shutt’s sixth grade science class charted the characteristics and observations of different rock types, especially when conducting an acid test. As they continue exploring to find out why some rocks bubbled when reacting with acid, they’re learning that science really rocks!

Do you know what the national animal of Scotland is? Well, some of the teams from last week's first-ever Student Government Trivia night had that answer and many more! The trivia night was open to the public, and we had twelve teams of four. Fun was definitely had by all! Keep on the lookout for trivia nights returning next school year.
*By the way, it is a Unicorn.

The annual elementary Lego Show was a big hit this year! There were 93 student participants, whether as teams or individuals. Door prizes were awarded to pre-K students Maximum Warriner and Antoni Anzures Reffitt and second grade student Cael Gemmel. Much thanks goes to Laura Buisch, for starting and organizing the Lego Show through the PTSO! After running the event for many years, she will hand the event over to the Student Council, who will keep the tradition going.

Thank you to local author Kevin Kurtz, who recently visited Arkport elementary to speak to students about the writing process and to read his book, “A Day in the Salt Marsh.” And thank you to Blue Jay Reading program leader Mrs. Cassie Kowalcyk for coordinating the visit. Blue Jay Reading is running the spring reading challenge. Elementary students have been challenged to read 100,000 minutes to increase their reading fluency. If they reach their goal, the can select a consequence for Mrs. Smith. Rumor has it that a slime dump or an overnight on the roof might be in her future!

Recently the Yorkers group had the amazing opportunity and honor to meet a WWII and Korean War veteran, Richard “Dick” Bondi. He shared his experience on a U.S. submarine, from eating and sleeping to close calls and lost friends. The students asked insightful questions and were on the edge of their seats. The Yorkers are a revived history group composed of sixth grade students; they have dedicated this year to learning about the history of our school, our town, our state and country. Richard Bondi was an inspiration to this group of Arkport students!

The seventh grade animal science class learned about responsible pet ownership from the owners of Grand View Canine Care, Patricia Robords and Cassandra Robords Bauer. Mrs. Bauer and Mrs. Robords, who is an ACS graduate, discussed the importance of regular pet grooming. The students ended their grooming unit by grooming Kuma, a deaf Australian shepherd.

The roller skating event held last Monday was a lot of fun! Students in grades K-2, 3-6 and 7-12 laced up skates – the high school session had 30 students join in. You could say, they were on a roll!
