School budget vote

On Tuesday, May 21, voters in the Arkport Central School District will decide on a $14,487,248 proposed budget for the 2024-25 school year, representing a $715,201 or 5.19% increase in spending over the current year.

A separate proposition will appear on the ballot to authorize the purchase of two 66-passenger diesel school buses for $325,000. Residents will also elect one candidate to the Board of Education for a five-year term.

Voting will take place in the Arkport Small Gymnasium from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21.

“We are committed to providing a high-quality education and resources for all students while being fiscally responsible to taxpayers,” explained Superintendent Jesse Harper. “This proposed budget not only sustains but permanently establishes many of the offerings we’ve introduced over the past few years using federal pandemic funds.”

“It’s our responsibility to provide our students with enriching educational experiences and to ensure they have the tools to thrive academically and personally,” he added.

If approved, the tax levy would increase by 2%, which is below the district’s tax levy limit, as defined by New York State’s tax levy cap legislation. Because of this, a simple majority of voters (50%+1) is needed for the budget approval.

The proposed budget continues to plan for capital outlay improvements. New York State allows school districts to spend up to $100,000 each fiscal year on a partially reimbursable capital outlay project. This year’s proposed budget includes a $100,000 capital outlay project for various classroom renovations and mechanical and technical updates throughout the district. State aid will reimburse approximately 80% of the project next year. In addition, the district will continue to utilize the New York state $35,000 security program to expand and upgrade district cameras.
